Keeping employees, keeping them motivated

The high cost of losing an employee

Top 5 tips for increasing employee retention

  1. Capture the heart
Celebrate accomplishments and inject fun into the workplace. Create compelling visions to motivate and excite your employees. For example:
    • Build a graffiti wall or an idea collage wall and encourage people to speak their minds
    • Plan team builder exercises at an external location, giving people some highly productive time away from the office
  2. Open communications
If employees feel that their opinions are important to you and that they’re heard, they’re more likely to be loyal. Make sure there’s a feedback channel available and act on the feedback you receive. For example:
    • Create idea teams–groups that meet for a coffee break once a week to generate ideas and opinions on specified topics. Consider mixing it up so people on the teams don’t all come from the same work groups.
  3. Build partnerships
Instead of treating your employees strictly as hired hands, involve them in the decision making process. Also, be sure to share your collective successes. For example:
    • Put up white boards in every coffee room. At regular intervals, post a new topic and ask for suggestions on how to improve different aspects of your business. Encourage input on any topic, from selling more products to improving morale.
    • Develop an incentive bonus plan structured for each worker, so that their successes are rewarded
  4. Encourage learning
The collective brain power of your employees may be a huge untapped resource that could give your company a significant competitive advantage. So make sure your employees stay up to date on important topics and give them the opportunity to improve their skills and knowledge. For example:
    • Offer training classes in-house and encourage learning by subsidizing approved courses at outside educational institutions
    • Create job shadowing opportunities to allow employees to strengthen their knowledge of different parts of your organization
  5. Keep the mood positive
Help build morale by complimenting employees on their work. Also, empower them to learn from their mistakes by encouraging them to try again.
